Fiorella Penaloza
“Being a member of AALHE has benefitted me both professionally and personally. I have learned greatly from my assessment colleagues and have a heightened appreciation for the diversity in assessment approach and style that is embraced by this incredible group. The willingness for members to help each other learn and grow is another invaluable asset. I have gained tremendously from professional feedback and networking supported by AALHE, and continue to learn as a volunteer. I value how learning-centric AALHE is and how committed it is to professional development. Thank you AALHE for contributing to my professional learning and development, I hope I can give back as much as I have received from this wonderful organization!” (Fiorella Penaloza, University of Hawai’i System)
Amanda Bylczynski
“The best thing about membership to AALHE is the sharing of knowledge and experience. I joined AALHE to gain a better understanding about assessment as part of my doctoral program in community college leadership. The mailings and conferences sparked my interest and led to assessment becoming my dissertation topic. Not only did AALHE give me my first opportunity to present at a conference on a student travel grant, their networking and educational opportunities helped me focus my dissertation and led to a new design for assessing student affairs and co-curricular education for my campus. I am grateful to be part of such a wonderful network.” (Amanda Bylczynski, Edison State Community College)
George Klemic
“I am faculty, rather than an assessment professional. AALHE and its members readily accept my ‘different’ perspective. Over the years, they have attended and engaged in my presentations, allowed me to help with boot camps, accepted my participation in committees, and offered guidance and feedback, as needed. Though I am different, you have all made me feel like I belong here” (George Klemic, Lewis University)

“My experience of AALHE over the last year of being a member and volunteer in AALHE has been one where I have connected with colleagues on a human, personal level to form authentic, nourishing friendships that have helped me grow, shine, and add value to my personal and professional life. AALHE is a space where you can truly find your community to help you problem-solve professional hurdles even as you make the best of numerous, amazing professional advancement opportunities. It is a home for those seeking a network of like-minded peers who are always there to help, support, and uplift you because they understand you.” (Dr. Divya Bheda, She/Her(s), Consultant, Trainer, Facilitator)
Jeanne Horst
“It's so wonderful to have such a vibrant community of professionals. AALHE has enhanced my work in so many ways. Because the organization is supported by volunteers, committee work gives the opportunity to work with and learn from others across the country. AALHE provides the space to hear other perspectives and approaches to assessment. The emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion inspires me to do better and be a better professional. I have met so many people whom I now consider my close professional colleagues and friends.” (Jeanne Horst, James Madison University)
Claudia Stanny
“The listserv is my daily sounding board and go-to resource for assessment questions. The conference is an opportunity to nurture virtual friendships and reaffirm my enthusiasm for doing assessment in the right way for the right reasons. The depth of expertise among AALHE members is matched only by the generosity of their collegiality.” (Claudia Stanny, University of West Florida)
Julie Morrison
“I am a faculty member who was tapped several years ago to lead our college assessment efforts. Due to my education and professional experience, I am knowledgeable in research design and course assessment, but I was not versed in assessment leadership. I asked an assessment colleague to point me to conferences I should be attending to learn more about the assessment community. I participated in the AALHE conference this past summer then became involved with the organization as a committee volunteer. My membership has allowed me to deepen my understanding of assessment, connect with colleagues in similar roles, and be a more effective assessment leader.” (Julie Morrison, Glendale Community College, AZ)
Catherine Wehlburg
“The networking that AALHE provides is incredible! Finding ways to connect with others in assessment to get feedback, collegial support, and new ideas has been an essential part of my work in assessment and student success. Connecting with colleagues through the conference, the listserv, volunteer committees, and the board has provided me with so much - personally and professionally.” (Catherine Wehlburg)
Susan Kahn
“Being a member of AALHE has connected me with other like-minded assessment enthusiasts who are passionate about advancing the work with equity, excellence, and fairness. I have been challenged to consider alternate perspectives and different approaches to similar challenges faced across regions and institutions. Additionally, the connections I have made through AALHE intersect with other projects advancing the field of assessment in higher education outside of the organization. Not only have these connections been professional, they have also become personal in our work together on projects. I once had a dear colleague (Patti) offer to virtually babysit my children at the height of the stay-at-home mandates due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The AALHE membership status is a symbol of appreciation for and work toward excellence in teaching and learning through assessment practices and policies that I regard as paramount in the work of higher education administrators and practitioners. I am so grateful for the community of scholars at AALHE!” (Susan Kahn, Northwestern State University)
Fiona Chrystall
“As an Assessment Office of one, I truly appreciate the opportunity to connect with fellow assessment professionals from all kinds of institutions across the nation. The AALHE Website houses a treasure trove of resources to help me in my work and to provide inspiration for how to do things differently or better.” (Fiona Chrystall, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College). “AALHE has provided a great network of professionals who have been a resource and inspiration to me.” (Katie Busby, The University of Mississippi)
Vince Nix
“First, the networking has been nice. I have a network but have added several others that I wouldn't have been learning from without membership here. Second, learning Stack was good for me in a practical-skills sense. I'd heard of it but had never used it. I found it incredibly effective and efficient last time in terms of prepping for the conference.” (Vince Nix, Lamar University)
